This painting marked my first exploration with knife painting, inspired by an image I stumbled upon on Pinterest. It depicts the abstract face of a man, shaded in hues of blue and black. With no defined features, the image leaves room for interpretation, evoking different emotions depending on who views it. It’s a piece that has transformed over time in the eyes of those who’ve seen it, becoming more than just the sum of its colors and shapes.

One of the most interesting interpretations came from a family friend during a visit. While casually observing the painting, they decided to reverse it—turning it upside down—and suddenly, what I had always seen as a face became, to them, a waterfall. As the artist, knowing the emotion and intention behind the piece, I initially struggled to see it from this new perspective. But over time, I began to embrace the idea, appreciating how art can take on new forms in the eyes of others, sometimes revealing a different truth than the one I intended.

For me, this painting symbolized a time in my life when I was laid back, with no real expectations. The blues in the painting didn’t represent sadness, but rather a sense of calm detachment, a feeling of going through the motions without expecting much from each new day—other than the fact that it, too, would be blue. It’s interesting how others found depth and different meanings, flipping the perspective, much like life itself—sometimes, the way we look at things changes what we see entirely.
