Today feels like the start of something new, though it’s not the first time I’ve tried. As a third-year BMS student juggling coursework, personal life, and a growing passion for fashion, this is actually my third attempt at launching a clothing brand. My previous efforts didn’t pan out—lack of experience, life getting in the way—but something about this time feels different. I’ve learned a lot, and I’m more determined than ever. Here’s how Day 1 of this journey unfolded.

Morning Reflections: Rediscovering an Old Dream

The day started like any other. After waking up and getting ready, I went to grab something comfortable to wear. But as usual, nothing in my wardrobe really fit what I had in mind. It was a small, everyday frustration that somehow sparked a bigger thought—why don’t I ever find what I really want?

That got me thinking about an idea I’ve had since I was younger, one that I’ve tried to pursue twice before: starting my own clothing line. Both times, things didn’t go as planned. Life happened, and my lack of experience showed. But here I am again, stubbornly chasing the same dream, only this time, I’ve spent months diving into fashion as a hobby, learning everything I can. I’m ready to give it another go.

Writing Down the Plan: A Fresh Start

Once the idea took hold again, I grabbed a pen and notebook. I kept it simple and wrote down a list of what I need to do to get this brand off the ground. It wasn’t some grand strategy—just small, manageable steps to start making this dream a reality. One of the first things on the list was to document the journey, which is where this blog series comes in.

I’m not claiming to know all the answers this time, but I do know that by sharing my experiences, I can keep myself accountable and maybe even inspire others in the same position.

Capturing the Vibe: Where Inspiration Comes From

The first real task I set for myself today was to capture the vibe I want for the brand. I spent hours scrolling through Instagram, Pinterest, Vogue Runway, and YouTube, looking for ideas that felt right. I even checked out some smaller, homegrown brands that have been doing amazing things lately.

It wasn’t easy, though. There’s so much content out there, and it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed. But after a lot of searching, I started to narrow down a few things that resonated with me—a mix of modern aesthetics with vintage touches, something high-end yet approachable. It’s still early, and I’m sure the vision will evolve, but I’m finally getting a clearer sense of direction.

Design Time: Sketching the First Concepts

By midday, I switched gears and sat down with my sketchbook. I’m not a professional designer, but I’ve always loved sketching ideas out on paper. It’s a process that helps me think more clearly. I spent about three and a half hours working through a few designs. Some were okay, others not so much, but I’ve set a goal: by the end of the week, I want to have 60 sketches in my book.

I’m not expecting all of them to be great—in fact, I’m counting on most of them being rough. The goal right now is to get the ideas flowing and clear out the bad ones so the good ones can start to shine.

The Name Struggle: Finding the Right Fit

Naming the brand, however, turned out to be tougher than I expected. I wrote down a few ideas, but none of them felt like the right fit. It’s frustrating because I want the name to reflect everything I’m envisioning for this brand, but maybe I’m overthinking it. For now, I’m going to focus on the designs and let the name come to me when it’s ready. I’ve learned from my past experiences that sometimes the best ideas need a bit of time to settle.

Evening Reflections: A Long Day, But a Good Start

It’s almost 9 PM now, and as I’m writing this, I’ve realized that I forgot to eat lunch—I got so wrapped up in the day’s tasks. It’s moments like this that remind me how much I care about making this work. After grabbing a bite, I’ll switch gears to some college work, but I know I’ll end the night by brainstorming more ideas for the brand.

Conclusion: One Step at a Time

Day 1 was a mix of excitement, frustration, and hope. It’s not my first attempt at starting a brand, but I’ve come to realize that every failure has taught me something valuable. This time around, I’m more focused, more prepared, and maybe a little wiser. There’s still a long road ahead, and I know there will be challenges, but for now, I’m just grateful to have taken the first step.
